Sometimes you don’t need strategic consulting — you need hosting that works and a person who knows your setup. That’s why I run shrug.host: human-scale hosting for small organizations and the occasional weird side project.
Why I run it
The consulting work kept turning up the same thing: small organizations stuck between do-it-yourself on a VPS and a hosting company that treats them as a ticket number. shrug.host is the in-between — modern infrastructure, run by someone you can actually reach. It’s by invitation or referral only, on purpose, so it stays small enough that I know every setup on it.
What fits
Static sites, email, DNS, and lightweight self-hosted tools — Nextcloud, Discourse, Mastodon, Matrix, and the like — for nonprofits, small businesses, creative projects, and side projects that want something reliable without running it themselves. Provided you behave.
It isn’t a VC-backed platform trying to be everything to everyone. If your needs are genuinely enterprise-scale, I’ll say so — and that’s probably a consulting conversation instead.
How it fits with the consulting
Some clients start with hosting and later bring me in for a specific project — a migration, an audit, some automation. Others start with consulting and hand the routine hosting to shrug.host once the infrastructure is designed and built. Either order works; they’re two different services run by the same person.
